The Welcome Wall

The Welcome Wall is being constructed next to the Australian National Maritime Museum (enter here for photo) in Darling Harbour, Sydney, and will be a national tribute to all immigrants to Australia honouring their contribution to building today's Australia. The 100 metre long wall will consist of a series of bronze panels onto which immigrants' names will be permanently engraved.

The first names engraved on the the wall were unveiled on January 24th 1999 by the Governor-General of Australia. Names will thereafter be added each Australia Day (January 26th) culminating on the January 26th 2001, the Centenary of the Australian Federation.

As part of the Celebrations of a Family 2000 Project we have the two arms of the Family represented by having the inscriptions (below) engraved on the Welcome Wall.

LIM Kee-Tey Joseph and family

LEONG Yip-Wing George and family

in addition to the names of my parents

LEONG Wai Cheong Richard and LIM Jean Mary

Later this year the names of the oldest members of each arm of the Family will also be added to the Wall,

LIM FONG TAVARES Joyce & Family

&

LEONG Raymond Wai Kei & Family

There is a similar memorial being organised at the Immigration Museum in Melbourne called the Tribute Garden. I have therefore added the names of Lim Kee Tey and Family and my parents names on this memorial. As both families lived in Melbourne I thought this was even more appropriate than the Welcome Wall project. These names will be unveiled in the Garden in early 2000.

I received about $600 in donations from about 20 generous family members, which was about twice the cost of the original two inscriptions.

In addition, to honour the Family and commemorate the upcoming "Celebration", I have organised the planting of a real "Family Tree" in Centennial Park, one of the great urban parks of Sydney and of the world. This will cost about $200.The tree, a Hoop Pine was planted a few weeks ago and is situated near a beautiful area in the park near the duck ponds and wetlands area. This tree will grow to about 40 meters in height when mature.

If any of you wish to make a new or second contribution, or wish another family member's name on the Welcome Wall or Tribute Garden please let me know. There are many other projects that I have ideas for which the money can be excellently used for!

Many thanks, sincerely yours,

Gary
